Literacy Grants
2025
The Gig Harbor Garden Tour is a ‘Tour for Literacy.’ All proceeds from our annual garden tour are awarded as grants to school and community groups advancing literacy. We recently awarded $35,000 from the June, 2025 Gig Harbor Garden Tour to 17 Community and school groups.
We are not experts on literacy work but we recognize the importance of helping ensure young children all learn to read and we put books in children’s hands to encourage a lifetime habit of reading.
We begin with 0 to 6 year olds. We partner with Altrusa to mail a book monthly to young children who are part of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. We support Pediatrics NW’s Reach out and Read program that gives 0-6 year olds books at annual Wellness Visits as part of their parenting skills lessons. And we provide books to the Key Peninsula Preschool and the Curious by Nature Preschool.
We awarded 8 grants to 6 different Elementary Schools, Artondale, Minter Creek, Pioneer, Swift Water, Voyager and Vaughn. Two of the grants fund books for all school, one book reading programs, one supports an all school Literacy Night, 2 are for classroom sets of chapter books, books for a classroom library for regular and special ed student classrooms, and materials to supplement a new district reading program.
We supported a district Young Authors Conference for middle school students and AAUW’s summer science camp for middle school girls.
Our grants support the books the Gig Harbor Police distribute at local events including Halloween, books for children visiting St Anthony’s ER and books for the Gig Harbor and Key Peninsula libraries to give out during their summer reading programs.
Although not large, each of these grants are enthusiastically received and we hope make a big difference in small places.

We continue to seek out opportunities to support literacy work in our community and will consider additional grant applications. See our web page: gigharborgarentour.org for information.
